Bretton Community Preschool – Early Years SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator)

31.25 hours – This can be flexible.                    Type of contract: Permanent

Location: Watergall Children and Family Centre, Watergall, Bretton PE3 8NX.

Starting salary £13.31 per hour. Term time only & Additional holiday entitlement.

Our vision is to create a fun, stimulating, caring environment, where children and adults are happy and can develop and learn together. We provide childcare for children aged 2 – 5 years, during term time.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a passionate and experienced practitioner to join our dedicated team and lead the strategic development of our SEND provision. This pivotal role involves working closely with practitioners, parents, and external agencies to ensure that every child with Special Educational Needs receives the support, guidance, and high-quality teaching they deserve.

The successful candidate will have a strong knowledge of the EYFS, hold a full and relevant Level 3, Early Years Childcare qualification (Early Years Educator), as well as a Level 3 SENCo qualification. You should be confident in engaging effectively with children, promoting positive behaviour, and responding sensitively to a wide range of situations.

You will need strong skills to deliver our vision and aims, along with the flexibility to provide support within the rooms when required. Above all, you must be committed to going the extra mile for the children and capable of building positive, trusting relationships with both children and parents.

The Early Years SENCO role involves:

  • Being responsible for the day-to-day operation of the setting’s SEN policy, ensuring that all practitioners understand their responsibilities towards children with SEND.
  • Monitoring and assessing children’s progress, adjusting strategies as needed.
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and best practices.
  • Fostering an inclusive environment that encourages all children to thrive.
  • Promoting a positive team culture focused on continuous improvement.
  • Ability to develop effective support strategies tailored to individual needs.
  • Providing guidance and support to colleagues in identifying and meeting the needs of the children with SEND.
  • Ensuring parents are closely involved throughout and that their insights inform action taken by the setting,
  • Liaising with professionals or agencies beyond the setting
  • Using Microsoft packages such as outlook, word and teams, to Maintain accurate records of children’s development and support plans.

All Successful applicants will need to undertake an enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) and provide two satisfactory references prior to their employment.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974. The amendments to the ROA 1974 (Exceptions Order 1975, (amended 2013 and 2020)) provide that when applying for certain jobs and activities, certain spent convictions and cautions are ‘protected’, so they do not need to be disclosed to employers, and if they are disclosed, employers cannot take them into account. The MOJ’s guidance on the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the Exceptions Order 1975, provides information about which convictions must be declared during job applications and related exceptions and further information about filtering offences can be found in the DBS filtering guide
