If you are practical, organised and confident in managing health and safety, maintenance and compliance, we would love to hear from you.
Why join Leighton Primary and Preschool?
Be part of a caring school community guided by our values of Ambition, Respect and Community.
Make a real and visible difference to the learning, safety and wellbeing of our children.
Work alongside a supportive and committed team.
Access ongoing training and opportunities for professional development.
Benefit from a competitive pension, with a school contribution of 14.4% for April 2026–March 2027.
Visits to the school are warmly welcomed — come and meet us and see our school for yourself.
The role
As School Site Manager, you will take responsibility for the day-to-day management of the school site, including security, maintenance, cleaning, contractors, premises compliance and health and safety.
You will need to be a hands-on and practical problem solver, while also being confident with the administrative and digital side of the role. Accurate records, effective planning and a strong understanding of compliance will be just as important as your practical skills.
Key responsibilities
Site management and security
Take responsibility for the day-to-day security and operation of the school site.
Carry out opening and closing procedures and undertake key-holder responsibilities.
Manage keys, alarms, CCTV checks and site security arrangements.
Ensure contractors and visitors comply with school procedures while on site.
Respond appropriately to site emergencies and unexpected issues.
Maintenance and premises
Carry out and coordinate routine maintenance, minor repairs and porterage tasks.
Identify maintenance issues and ensure they are logged, prioritised and resolved appropriately.
Oversee building systems including heating, lighting and plumbing.
Liaise with contractors and service providers regarding repairs, servicing and planned works.
Help ensure the school site, buildings, grounds, furniture and equipment are maintained to a high standard.
Cleaning and standards
Monitor cleaning supplies, equipment and stock levels.
Ensure appropriate standards of cleanliness and hygiene are consistently maintained.
Undertake cleaning duties as required, including the safe and hygienic removal of bodily fluids such as vomit.
Health, safety and compliance
A significant part of this role will be taking ownership of the school's health and safety documentation and compliance records.
You will:
Maintain and regularly review risk assessments, including Legionella checks, COSHH records and contractor RAMS.
Maintain accurate and accessible digital health and safety records.
Manage permit-to-work documentation, inspection records, servicing certificates and compliance documentation.
Record and follow up accidents, incidents and near misses.
Manage annual and periodic testing schedules, including fire alarms, emergency lighting and boiler servicing.
Ensure all relevant documentation is complete, current and readily available for audits, inspections and governors.
Identify potential risks and take appropriate action to maintain a safe environment for pupils, staff and visitors.
IT, systems and record keeping
The successful candidate will be confident using digital systems and understand the importance of accurate, auditable records.
You will:
Use school IT systems to log, track and report maintenance, health and safety and compliance issues.
Be confident using spreadsheets, email, digital forms and online record-keeping systems.
Keep electronic records organised, accurate and up to date.
Monitor outstanding actions and ensure follow-up work is completed.
Produce clear and timely reports for the School Business Manager and governors.
Wider responsibilities
Support school lettings, events and site-related activities as required.
Provide appropriate health and safety information and briefings where necessary.
Work professionally with staff, governors, parents, contractors and external agencies.
Contribute to the safeguarding of pupils by following school procedures and reporting any concerns appropriately.
Promote and demonstrate the school's values of Ambition, Respect and Community in all aspects of your work.
We will expect you to
Take ownership of the school site and ensure it is safe, secure, welcoming and well maintained.
Keep health and safety and compliance documentation accurate, current and audit-ready.
Use digital systems effectively to log, prioritise, monitor and report site issues.
Identify problems proactively rather than waiting for them to become urgent.
Communicate clearly with school leaders and provide confidence that premises and compliance matters are being managed effectively.
Work collaboratively with colleagues and contractors.
Demonstrate our values of Ambition, Respect and Community in every aspect of your work.
